Feel Awkward in front of the camera? Here are some tips to help you feel like yourself

As a wedding and portrait photographer, I've worked with countless folks who say that they feel awkward or nervous in front of the camera. Trust me, it's totally normal! Here are some tips and tricks to help you feel more comfortable, confident, and like yourselves during your photo session.

Tip #1: Choose a Photographer You Trust

First and foremost, it's essential to find a photographer whose personality and approach make you feel at ease. Look for someone who takes the time to get to know you and your partner before the session, and who creates a relaxed, fun atmosphere. When you trust your photographer, it shows in your photos!

Tip #2: Treat Your Session Like a Date

My biggest tip for getting beautiful, authentic photos? Treat your session like a romantic date! Compliment each other, flirt, laugh, and just have fun. I know it can be awkward to be in front of the camera for so long, but try to pretend the photographer is not there and just enjoy quality time with your person. Play some music, sip on a cocktail (if that's your thing), and let the sparks fly!

Tip #3: Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

During your session, direct your attention towards one another, not the camera. We’ve all been trained to look and smile when there is a camera pointed at our face but trust me, some of my favorite images are when couples are more engaged with each other than the lens. And whenever in doubt, just look at your partner and smile. Pretend you're the main characters in your own romance movie!

Tip #4: Embrace Movement and Intimacy

Listen to the prompts and direction of the photographer, but the key is to keep moving, touching, and interacting with each other naturally. A photographer can usually get a few good shots from a static pose, but when you are moving and flowing and doing your thing, the amount of images a photographer can capture is endless. And all of that is a part of your love story - the way your partner’s hand rubs the small of your back, the way you interlace your fingers, and the way you laugh at each other’s silly jokes. That all is unique to your relationship and can only be documented when you interact and allow yourself to be fully present with your partner. So trust the process and enjoy the moment!

Tip #5: Communicate with Your Photographer

Open communication is key to creating a comfortable, personalized photo experience. Share your concerns, preferences, and ideas before and during the session. If you need more direction or something feels awkward or you just need a break, just let your photographer know! They are here to guide you but most importantly they want you to feel at ease and like yourself.

Bonus Tip: Practice Self-Care and Confidence

Remember, confidence comes from within! Take some time for self-care before your session, whether that's meditating, listening to affirmations, or pampering yourself. Pick your favorite outfits to wear that make you feel comfortable and beautiful. Focus on the love you share with your partner and the excitement of celebrating your relationship. Embrace the awkward moments, laugh off the jitters, and let your unique personalities shine.

At the end of the day, your photo session is a chance to connect with your person, have fun, and create meaningful memories. Trust the process, be yourselves, and let the magic happen! If you're ready to experience a comfortable, playful photo session that captures your authentic love story, I'd be honored to be your guide. Let's chat and make some magic together!
